What Are 4-H and FFA — And Why Do They Matter So Much?

Here at Steger Family Farms, we’re more than just farmers — we’re mentors, fair volunteers, and proud supporters of youth in agriculture. And two programs that have deeply shaped our family and community are 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America).

But what are they exactly?

What is 4-H?

4-H is one of the largest youth development organizations in the country. It teaches children responsibility, leadership, and life skills through hands-on experiences — whether they’re raising animals, creating crafts, growing a garden, or running a small business.

At the heart of 4-H are its four “H’s”:
Head, Heart, Hands, and Health — a motto that captures the well-rounded, values-based learning these kids receive.

What is FFA?

FFA is a leadership and agricultural education program offered in middle and high schools. It prepares students for careers in agriculture, science, business, and leadership. From welding and crop science to public speaking and livestock judging, FFA members learn real-world skills and build confidence they’ll carry for life.

How We Support Local 4-H & FFA

At Steger Family Farms, we actively support our local youth by purchasing animals at livestock auctions and fairs, ensuring these hardworking kids are rewarded for the time and care they put into raising their animals. These purchases go directly back into their education, future projects, or savings — and let us invest in quality meat from local families we know.

We also donate time, resources, and advice throughout the year, because we’ve been in their boots. These programs shape responsible, capable young adults and help keep agriculture alive in rural communities.

Whether it’s your first time hearing about 4-H and FFA, or you’re a former member yourself, we encourage you to support your local fair and youth auctions — it’s one of the most direct ways to pour back into your community and ensure the future of farming stays strong.
